Ducati guy offered me 0% financing, but there's a catch

I’d have to jump up to the big boy 1200 (possibly even the 1200S, I can’t remember exactly), which adds a few extra thousands of dollars... I declined any offered test rides as I don’t need the temptation.

Thoughts?

If the 821 had adjustable suspension I’d still be firmly in 821 camp, but it doesn’t. At least without going for an 821 stealth, which isn’t offered in red so... Moot point! As a big heavy guy being able to adjust shit is moderately important.

Also, if anyone wants to give me a brief lesson on new car financing math and common terms so I don’t miss anything important talking with the finance department again, that would be super appreciated.

A stealth in red? Is t that counterintuitive?

you gotta wonder what it is about the larger bikes that makes them not sell/people not want them so that they have to offer 0% to get them to move.

I’d skip it. bigger isnt always better, especially in bikes.

About as counterintuitive as a Ducati flying under the radar in the first place

Still wish the stealth trim wasn't just offered in grey

1200 is a LOT of bike. I’m with Monkee, bigger isn’t always better. See: Miata, Grom, etc.

1200 is a smidge too much. I'm afraid to ask, but what dealer is this?

Something something... You’ll shoot your eye out kid.

I’m about a year into a 5 year loan on my husky (after promising myself I’d never finance a vehicle). But they offered 0% and who am I to argue with free money?

If you’re financing, depending on the numbers, big boy unit might be cheaper in the end with 0% than the smaller engine models with whatever interest rate you get. If you go to google and type car calculator, first result is  a super simple calculator with price, interest, duration, monthly payment and total paid in interest over the term.

Zero % financing is $16.67 per month per thousand financed over 5 years. 5% is $19 per month per thousand financed. You’d pay $1132 in interest for every thousand financed over the course of the loan.

It seems Ducati’s offers of 0% are for 36 months only - that’s $28 per month per thousand financed.

That can help with some quick napkin math.

Did I miss a post? This is a first bike, right? And y ou’re going new?

Imo, go used and cheap, the insurance on a new bike for a new rider will be in the thousands. Get something used and do liability only, that’ll be maybe 2-300 annually

These are the Ducati offers from South Sound Motorcycles currently:

Not sure if they are any different but I’ve always had good experiences with them.

I had a ninja back in high school, and after finishing my rider course and getting my endorsement recently, I borrowed a Grom for a few weeks.

I’m s o sick of fixing cars. I just don’t want to deal with sourcing parts and troubleshooting problems with my first long-term bike. That’s the main reason I’m looking at new, although keeping more money freed up compared to buying used is a nice perk too . I want a good all-rounder, which has pushed me towards nakeds and upright sport bikes. Maybe adv if they were cheaper!

Hmm, I definitely need to look into insurance

If you want the more powerful bike, then go for it. Otherwise, the 0% interest is offset by the increased expense of the bike.

If I were you, I’d wait until Seattle’s offseason, then buy a nearly new bike for pennies. My buddies down here head to Utah in winter and get killer deals on almost new bikes.

If you financed a $12k Monster at 5% for five years, you’d pay $1,587.29 in interest over the course of the loan. That’s about $2.20 per month per $1k fina nced. ($2.20x60x12)

Ducati offers 0% financing for 36 months. If you financed a $12k Monster 821 for 36 months at 5%, you’d end up paying a total of $947.43 in interest over the course of the loan. If the 1200 is less than $948 more than the 821, they’re basically giving you free money (sort of). If it’s more than that, and you don’t want a more powerful bike, they’re just collecting the interest up front. I use this calculator.

Don’t forget that you need to get a new exhaust & ECU upgrade.

Not sure if you’re into it, but check out the Z 900RS at a Kawi dealer. They’re practically giving them away right now.

You are correct - $1132 was the total amount paid with interest on a $1000 loan, so $132 total. I’ve read the correct thing and wrote the incorrect thing.

The newer ones are actually pretty reliable. Just normal maintenance and software updates typically. Even the desmo service is 18k on the monster.

I never really saw mine as bland, but yeah, I see your point, it’s kind of so prominent in the motorcycle scene that it’s basically their M iata (meaning very capable, but not going to impress anyone)

If we wait long enough on that trip, SVs might depreciate to the point that they qualify :p

I like your style. Too bad you’ll wear through the rear in 3k miles if you do that. And that’s $200 each. Don't forget to consider maintenance costs if you plan on putting a bunch of miles on. 18k mile service is $1500-2000. More if you need a chain and sprockets.

Oh I was going to ask about maintenance. The 18k doesn’t sound tooooo terribad, but should I expect shit to go wrong before that? I’m mostly okay with pricey maintenance assuming it’s not a constant (old Volvo level) of shit breaking
